We stayed overnight at Victoria River at a Road house that had Van park facilities. Here is where I went down to the river, seeking a spot to do a little fishing. Sitting down on the bank, I scanned the river banks with my Binoculars, to see a huge Croc, on my side of the river about 15 meters from where I was sitting. To think I was going to return to the Van, get the rod and wade out in the river to cast, goes to prove, you never really know! That evening we were greeted by numerous Kangaroos, Bats, owls, and a menagerie of small birds, it was a rich area of wild life.
Next morning he headed further North to the N.T. town of Katherine, booked into a Van Park, (numerous choices of about 10 Van parks in this town). The next day we did the Katherine Gorge trip, (which, I thought was a Rip-off), the prices were absorbent, but we paid and saw the Gorge, exercise done!
I noticed the local Aboriginals were very Boisterous, shouting obscenities to people walking by and attempting to give the impression of their supremacy, (which they had exactly “zilch”), this left me with bad feelings of Katherine. We toured the area, but I particularly was not impressed, hence, we gave Katherine a short visit of just two days, so they didn’t get too much money out of this family.
Heading further North along the busy Stuart Highway, we passed Pine Creek, Adelaide River and resided in a nice town called Batchelor; this was close to the Litchfield National Park, and a good point to stop-over. The Batchelor Van Park was nice, nestled amongst Bamboo trees. Next morning we drove through the Litchfield National Park, I would say, its event well worth the effort. The only place I didn’t cover in the park, was the Lost City, the wife “spat the dummy” after crossing a flooding river and a rather “uneven track terrain”, we turned back from that event.
After two days in that area we “up stakes” and moved onto the City of Darwin, we chose the Van park in Howard Springs, being South of the City a easily accessed from our southerly approach and lack of knowledge of the City.
We thought the Northern Territory’s Capital was a nice place, mind you, we were there mid winter, mid summer may have been a different outlook all-together. We spent seven days in Darwin, engrossing in activities such as a “Sundowner harbour cruise”, a day at the markets at “Fanny Bay” and an interesting trip to a Wildlife Park south west of the City. We explored the City and suburbs, paying special attention to Fishermen’s wharf and the historical Carp fish feeding exhibit. (I will mention here, we met an English chap that had booked into a Darwin Van Park down at Lee Point, the dreaded midges had attacked his legs, which were a mass of ulcers, being prepared against the elements can “Make” or “Break” a holiday).
Leaving Darwin after an eventful week, we proceeded east along the Arnham Highway into Kakadu National Park, making our way slowly down to the heart of Kakadu to the community of Jabiru, where we booked into a Van park designed in the shape of a giant Ferris wheel.
