It’s a great shame that many people believe that leaving a dog on its own is OK simply because “it’s a dog…” The truth is, dogs are sensitive souls and when you leave them on their own they can become anxious.

That anxiety, particularly for younger dogs, may manifest in the dog barking, digging, chewing or trying to escape. So remember that if you have left your dog at home on its own, don’t be surprised if you come back and find a cushion has been mauled. Don’t punish the dog as it won’t know why you’re doing it and you’ll compound his already fragile self.

Keeping your dog indoors for the first couple of days may be necessary until they settle in. Just keep your cushions safe! Once your dog is settled, putting it outside occasionally while you are at home gives the dog its own time safe in the knowledge that you are around.

Dogs that are most likely to suffer separation anxiety include:
    • Re-homed dogs.
    • Attention seeking dogs.
    • Timid and nervous dogs.

Dog training can help build your dogs confidence making it less stressed when you leave, so if you haven’t thought about training, have a wee think now. It’s not expensive and as well as confidence building, it will also enable you to train your dog to do all the necessary domestic things that will help you and your pooch get the best out of one another.

Another great tip is to not give the dog any attention 10 minutes before you leave and 10 minutes after you get home. A chew toy – such as a Kong - will also keep the dog calm when you leave as they will come to associate you leaving with the treat.

If you have any questions about anything to do with your pet, be it training, legal issues, injuries or basic care, email COBY at Coby@loconut.com.au and he will get an answer from John the Vet or Kylie the Shelter Boss at the RSPCA.
