We went after Saddam in Iraq for them, now we're going to use biological WMDs on the cane toads. These blighters are threatening to invade Western Australia and Professor Rick Shine from Sydney who's been studying the biology of cane toads reckons he's found a way to get rid of them.
He's discovered a parasite that attacks cane toads, and a pheromone that stresses out the toad tadpoles. The tadpoles get so stressed that half of die - and the remaining grow up about half the size of the normal toad. These smaller toads are easily killed by the parasite.
The best bit is, unlike all the previous ways of controlling the cane toad, these methods don't affect the native toads at all!
'...the combination of those two things start to suggest, I think, a pretty straightforward, pretty low risk, but probably pretty effective way to start controlling toads.'
Kill 'em all I say!
