Telstra's much-hyped Next G network has been given the thumbs down from WA users, with many struggling to get reception in regional areas.

Many people reacted in disbelief to Telstra's announcement that it had "achieved the milestone of the same or better coverage on the Next G network as on CDMA”.

“I used to get a signal all the way to Bussleton with a little magnetic antenna on the car with CDMA but this Next G doesn't seem to travel far,” he says.

However Ray Philp, Telstra’s General Manager for the Great Southern region, says the problem is not with the network itself but with the handsets people are using to connect to it.

Ray says that the reason the Next G experience has been disappointing for some people is that “some of the Next G handsets are not as good as the CDMA handsets”.

Are you a Telstra customer? How do you find their mobile coverage?

whether the problem is with the phones or not, telstra is selling these phones as nextg phones for use in rural areas, while working at target I had many customers annoyed with telstra for selling them their nextg phone, often because their cdma phone was broken and they had no choice, and were assured that nextg would provide the same range.

it matters not if the technology provides the same range if they are not being provided with the devices to access this range and it should be telstras role to ensure that the products they sell meet up to their claims

Might the problem be the dodgy salespeople? I mean, they might well know that the phone won't work in rural areas (blah blah blah), but heck, if they can get the money for it ...

And in the end, Telstra gets the blame, not the dodgy salesperson!

get off Telstra! They are big business and Sol Trujillo is laughing all the way to the bank with a doubling of his short term incentives (allegedly?). They have just been smashing us for years and they are still by far the most expensive carrier in my view.
