Sex workers are currently gathered in Kalgoorlie for their first ever regional conference in a bid to bring national attention to the fact that WA MPs are yet to pass laws (introduced in August) to regulate WA's sex industry.

At present, prostitution is legal, but living off the earnings of it is not. Nor is running a brothel.

WA Attorney-General Jim McGinty's bill proposes to change this by decriminalising and regulating brothels and escort agencies in WA. The bill - which was created in collaborataion with sex workers, health professionals and local government and has the support of WA police - is believed to be a pragmatic approach to protecting sex workers' health and safety, yet WA MPs are dragging their heels in passing it.

Sex workers' are sending out a public call to the WA parliament, saying the political grandstanding must come to an end and that it's time to pass the law and finish the job of granting sex workers' rights and equal opportunities.

It is about time.

if you have a moral objection to prostitution, do not involve yourself in the industry.

however there are people who wish to avail themselves of such services and those who wish to work in the industry.

by decrimilising the industry you remove the whole indentured servitude aspect that many find appalling such as keeing people trapped via drugs, money or threats.

but it simply boils down to this, if people want to pay for sex, and people want to be paid for sex then who are you to say how people should or should not live their lives?

i guess there is a need to regulate this, but i agree, if people are willing to do it and people are willing to pay for it, its just pretty much like any other business really...

I agree with allowing people the right to choose whether they earn money for sex / pay for sex; however, what concerns me is young girls who become involved in the sex industry through bad decision making and may live to regret it later in life. For instance, young 18 year old girls who have drug habits can easily be wooed into prostituting themselves to support their habits. Some 18 year old girls can be very vulnerable due to traumatic things that have happened in their lives and do not have the ability to carefully weigh up how such a decision could affect the rest of their lives. The minimum age that people should be legally allowed to earn money from prostitution should be at least 25 years.

Regarding the issues stated above, they are some reasons why legalisation would be benificial, you have a regulated industry that is disadvantaged by workers on drugs.

also, people will make bad desicions no matter what, and people will work in the sex industry no matter what, if someone would choose poorly would it not be better to have them enter into a industry not tainted by pimps, abuse and drugs but rather a legitimate industry protected by laws and regulations, where the lifelong ramifications are less severe.

Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world...so why knock it...If that is how some people want to make a living let them be...If some people want topay for it let them be as well...EACH TO THEIR OWN...nothing wrong with it at least they arent out robbing people for a living..I take my hat of to those that do this...It takes a lot of courage to do this...
