External link: From wine to the mine

A new study to be presented at the 2007 LEME Mineral Exploration Semina in Perth this week, has found wine and soft drink can be used as a cost-effective solution in the surveying of mine sites.

Scientists from Australia and Canada hope to use wine and soft drink to extract metals from soils to decide viable sites for mining metals such as silver, zinc, copper and nickel.

The study, expected to be published in the journal Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis, found the soft drink and wine solutions were as good as or better than the commonly used extraction solutions.

The research is under peer review.

Geez .. and I know people who drink this stuff (mixing wine and soft-drink). Don't ask me - it's the same group of people who mix whisky with tea.

The surprising thing is that it's not cheap whisky or wine that they're mixing either!
